Our Available Guardians

Available guardians may include rescue dogs given a second chance, dogs we are helping find a new placement, and the occasional puppy or young dog from JK Homegrown.

Why Rehoming Matters

Rehoming can work. I know that because many of the dogs who have been part of my own life came to me through rescue or rehoming, including my first dogs. A change in home did not make them less loved, less valuable, or somehow failed dogs. In some cases, it was exactly what allowed them to end up where they belonged.

Not every dog is going to be the right fit for every home, farm, or family. Circumstances change, needs change, and sometimes an owner realizes that they simply cannot provide what a particular dog needs. I have a lot of respect for the people who recognize that and put in the effort to find a better placement instead of allowing the situation to deteriorate or abandoning the dog altogether.

There is an important difference between responsibly rehoming a dog and dumping one. Rehoming does not automatically mean that someone failed their dog. Sometimes acknowledging that another home may be a better fit is one of the most responsible decisions an owner can make.

That does not mean I believe rescue is the only ethical way to get a dog. JK Homegrown is very firmly adopt or shop responsibly, not “adopt, don’t shop.” There is absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing a responsibly bred dog from an ethical breeder who is thoughtful about health, temperament, placement, and the future of the dogs they produce.

Rescue, responsible rehoming, and ethical breeding can all have a place. What matters to me is that the decisions being made put the dog’s welfare first and give that dog the best opportunity to succeed in the home or working environment where they ultimately end up.

About Available Guardians

Rescue guardians are given time to settle in before being considered for placement. Each rescue will be Embark tested for breed makeup and evaluated around the livestock available on the farm. I want enough time to see the dog’s actual temperament, working preferences, strengths, and areas that still need training before deciding what type of home may be appropriate.

No evaluation can guarantee how a dog will behave in every future environment. Livestock guardian dogs still require appropriate introductions, management, training, and time to adjust to a new farm.
