Our Ducks
-
We raise Muscovy ducks as our primary duck breeding program. We also maintain a small satellite flock of Ancona ducks for a friend’s program, and I keep a small mixed flock for eggs.
-
I got my first Muscovy after confirming that I am indeed allergic to chicken eggs. At this point in my journey, the farm’s focus was homestead self-sufficiency, which led me to source locally bred Muscovies from Secret Garden Farms.
Just like all things, I fell in love and grew my flock, my passion, and my education. -
I am passionate about The Livestock Conservancy and the preservation of endangered breeds and varieties, but the Muscovies came before the focus of the farm shifted.
Muscovies are wonderful homestead and farm ducks. They have personality in abundance, and my ducks never fail to produce laughter, ducklings, and eggs that continue to solidify that I will always have Muscovies on the farm.
Breeding and working with a conservation breed also takes a lot of time, energy, and infrastructure. I want to make sure I have the capacity before adding another program that needs extra care and attention.

About Muscovy Ducks
Muscovies are unusual among domestic ducks. They originated in Central and South America and are the only duck recognized in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection that is not descended from the Mallard. They are classified as a heavy duck and are easily recognized by their prominent facial caruncles and the significant size difference between drakes and hens. The APA recognizes Black, Blue, Chocolate, and White varieties, although Muscovies occur in many additional colors and patterns.
At JK Homegrown, Muscovies are my primary duck breeding program. I maintain separate color groups so I can better predict and manage the genetics I am producing, but my selection priorities remain consistent across the flock. I select first for healthy, vigorous, functional birds while also working toward the Standard of Perfection, reducing traits I do not want to perpetuate, and maintaining the colors and patterns that make Muscovies one of my favorite parts of the farm.
Primary focus:
Maintaining distinct color groups that produce more predictable offspring while preserving healthy, vigorous, functional Muscovies.
Selection priorities:
Health and vigor, functional structure, correct type toward the APA Standard of Perfection, eliminating the whitehead/canizie trait, and reducing pied expression in certain lines.
Current Goals:
I want to produce consistently solid offspring in my chocolate pen. I love the pied patterns so that will not be eliminated, but creating a consistent solid line is my current goal. My ultimate goal is to get my Muscovy aligned with the Standard so that I can show and not be disqualified due to the pied gene and caruncles. I do appreciate a lower profile when it comes to the caruncles as my birds still need to be able to free range and function.

Ancona ducks are listed under Watch status per the Livestock Conservancy
Ancona ducks are a hardy, adaptable American heritage breed known for their broken mottled pattern, excellent foraging ability, and strong egg production. They are considered a dual-purpose breed, producing both meat and large eggs in a range of colors including white, tinted, blue-green, and spotted.
I maintain a small satellite flock of Anconas that supports a friend’s larger breeding program. My flock is not intended to become one of the farm’s major standalone programs, but maintaining another group of healthy birds gives those genetics another place to exist and contribute to the breed’s future.

Breeds: Saxony, Cayuga, Production Rouen, Production Runner, and barnyard mixes
Primary focus: productive ducks that lay well and provide a reliable source of duck eggs
Selection priorities: laying ability, health, temperament, vigor, and functional body structure
Our Duck Egg Flock is a mixed flock, much like the chicken Egg Flock, this is where I have room to keep some ducks simply because I enjoy them without every bird needing to belong to a focused breeding program. They still need to be healthy, functional, and productive to earn their place in the flock.
These birds are the primary source of the duck eggs produced at JK Homegrown. This is not a managed breeding group, so fertility is not monitored and there may not always be a drake housed with them.
