JK Homegrown General Livestock Sales and Placement Policy
Last updated: August 30, 2026
Scope
This policy applies to live animals sold or placed by JK Homegrown, including chickens, quail and other gamebirds, ducks, geese, sheep, rabbits, and other livestock that may be offered in the future.
Table eggs, hatching eggs, and livestock guardian dogs are covered by separate policies.
Chickens, quail, and other gamebirds are generally offered as hatchlings unless an individual listing states otherwise. Waterfowl may be offered as hatchlings, juveniles, or adults. Other livestock may be offered at different ages according to current availability.
Availability and Buyer Response
Availability depends on current production, hatch results, animal development, and JK Homegrown's evaluation of each animal.
When JK Homegrown contacts a prospective buyer to offer an available animal, the buyer has 24 hours to respond. If the buyer does not respond within that period, JK Homegrown may contact the next interested person.
An inquiry does not guarantee availability or reserve an animal. When a deposit is required, the animal is not considered held or reserved until the required deposit has been received.
How Animals Are Represented
Animals may be represented under one of the following classifications:
Breeding Quality
An animal that has been evaluated and is considered suitable for breeding based on the information available at the time of sale.
Breeding Prospect
A young, developing, or otherwise unproven animal that shows potential for future breeding use but cannot yet be fully evaluated. A breeding prospect is not guaranteed to mature into breeding-quality stock.
Non-Breeding
A healthy animal intentionally excluded from breeding. Any known reason for that classification will be disclosed. A non-breeding animal may still be productive, useful, and valuable.
Production or Pet Placement
An animal offered primarily for egg production, farm utility, companionship, or another non-breeding purpose.
Market Animal
An animal sold with the understanding that it may be raised or used for food.
These classifications reflect JK Homegrown's evaluation at the time of sale. They are not guarantees of mature quality, production, fertility, breeding success, temperament, or suitability for another breeder's program or the buyer's individual goals.
JK Homegrown uses the agricultural terms soft cull and hard cull when discussing breeding and selection decisions. A soft cull is an animal removed from breeding consideration without being designated for euthanasia or processing. When appropriate, a soft-cull animal may be placed in an egg flock, companion home, production home, or other non-breeding setting with full disclosure. A hard-cull animal will not be sold as live breeding or pet stock.
Deposits and Reservations
Deposits are not required for every sale. JK Homegrown may require a deposit for a hold or reservation, transportation arrangements or costs, buyer-requested DNA sexing, meat shares, ram lambs, or another animal, service, or expense identified before payment.
The required deposit amount may vary. The amount and the applicable refund terms will be disclosed before the deposit is accepted.
Some deposits may be refundable when the buyer provides the required advance notice. A last-minute cancellation does not qualify for a deposit refund. For a pickup scheduled in advance, a cancellation made less than 36 hours before the agreed pickup date and time is considered a last-minute cancellation.
Travel deposits are 75% refundable if transportation is canceled before the transport vehicle leaves JK Homegrown. The remaining 25% compensates JK Homegrown for loading and preparation time. Once the transport vehicle has left JK Homegrown, the travel deposit is nonrefundable.
If JK Homegrown cancels a sale or cannot provide the agreed animal, any refund will be handled according to the deposit terms disclosed for that sale and any expenses or services already completed.
Payment
For a local sale, the remaining balance is due at pickup before the animal is transferred to the buyer.
An item that will be shipped must be paid in full before shipping is fulfilled. Shipping is available only when expressly offered and is subject to the terms provided for that shipment.
JK Homegrown accepts cash, Cash App, Venmo, and payments made through the JK Homegrown website. Customers paying cash should bring the correct amount because change may not always be available.
Pickup, Missed Pickup, and Additional Holding Time
When pickup has been arranged in advance for a future date and time, the buyer must provide at least 36 hours' notice to cancel.
If no deposit has been paid and the buyer cannot complete pickup as arranged, JK Homegrown may contact the next interested buyer.
A deposit is forfeited when the buyer cancels with less than the required 36 hours' notice or misses the scheduled pickup.
Animals offered on a first-come, first-served basis must be picked up as soon as reasonably possible at a time coordinated with JK Homegrown.
Additional holding time is not automatic and must be approved by JK Homegrown. If additional days are approved, a boarding fee applies. Boarding fees vary according to the animal's species, age, and care requirements. Boarding fees must be paid in advance and are nonrefundable.
Health and Disclosure at Transfer
JK Homegrown will offer only animals believed to be healthy at the time of transfer. Hatchlings that required significant assistance or struggled substantially during hatch will not be sold.
Any known fault relevant to the animal's represented purpose will be disclosed. The listing or sales discussion will also identify how the animal is being represented at the time of sale.
Buyers should inspect animals at pickup and raise any visible injury, weakness, or other obvious concern before leaving. This inspection does not waive a claim involving a condition that could not reasonably have been observed at pickup.
Health Concerns After Transfer
A health claim applies only to a condition reasonably believed to have existed before transfer. It does not apply to illness, injury, or loss caused by transportation, housing, brooder conditions, exposure after pickup, accidents, predators, or improper care.
Health concerns must be reported within the following periods:
- Hatchlings: within 24 hours of pickup.
- Juvenile or adult birds and rabbits: within 72 hours of pickup.
- Sheep and other larger livestock: within seven days of pickup.
Reporting a concern within the applicable period makes the claim eligible for review. It does not automatically guarantee a refund, credit, or replacement.
The buyer must provide reasonable documentation, including photographs or video, the symptoms observed and when they began, transportation information, and relevant care, housing, or brooder details. Veterinary documentation or a necropsy may be required for sheep, rabbits, or when the cause of illness or death is disputed.
Remedies for an Approved Health Claim
When the evidence supports a preexisting, undisclosed condition and the claim is approved, remedies are considered in the following order:
1. JK Homegrown will offer a replacement when the animal or placement can reasonably be replaced.
2. If the buyer does not want a replacement, JK Homegrown will offer farm credit equal to the animal's full purchase price.
3. If the buyer declines farm credit, a purchase-price refund may be offered. Refund amounts are determined case by case but will not be less than 50% of the animal's purchase price.
Poultry Sexing
Poultry hatchlings are sold straight-run unless the individual listing specifically identifies them as sexed or presumed sexed. Straight-run means no representation or guarantee of sex is being made.
When a bird is represented as presumed sexed, the description reflects JK Homegrown's best estimate using the method appropriate for that bird. This may include feather sexing, voice sexing, or evaluation based on age and development. Presumed sex is not guaranteed and does not qualify for an incorrect-sex remedy.
An incorrect-sex remedy applies only when the individual listing expressly states that the bird's sex is guaranteed. To make a claim, the buyer must notify JK Homegrown within seven days after the bird's sex can reasonably be confirmed and provide clear photographs, video, or other reasonable documentation.
When a guaranteed-sex bird proves to be the incorrect sex, the first remedy is a similar-age replacement when one is available. If no similar-age replacement is available, the buyer may wait for the next comparable bird even if its age differs. If no comparable replacement becomes available, the buyer may choose either farm credit or a partial refund equal to the difference between the amount paid and the applicable straight-run price at the time of purchase.
Because poultry cannot return to the farm, the buyer remains responsible for the original bird. The buyer is also responsible for picking up the replacement or paying any agreed transportation costs.
Development and Future Performance
Young animals are evaluated using the information available at the time of sale. An animal may perform well during its early evaluations and later develop a disqualifying fault or another unexpected trait as it matures. JK Homegrown selects for vigor and temperament, but genetics, development, management, and environmental conditions can affect the mature animal.
JK Homegrown does not guarantee mature quality, fertility, breeding success, production, temperament, or suitability for the buyer's particular goals unless a guarantee is expressly included in the individual listing or sales agreement.
If a young animal sold for breeding later develops a disqualifying fault, the buyer may contact JK Homegrown to request a similarly aged replacement at no additional cost if a suitable animal is available. A cash refund is not offered for a later-developed disqualification. If no similarly aged replacement is available, the buyer may wait until the following season and request a discounted replacement. The amount of the next-season discount is determined case by case.
Transportation and Transfer of Responsibility
JK Homegrown will provide an appropriate transport container for hatchlings. Buyers must provide a secure, adequately ventilated carrier for juveniles and adults.
Responsibility for safe transportation transfers to the buyer after pickup. Injury or loss caused by the buyer's carrier, vehicle conditions, handling, travel plans, or other transportation arrangements does not qualify for a refund or replacement.
Housing, Brooder, and Care Responsibilities
The buyer is responsible for having appropriate housing, heat, feed, water, fencing, shelter, and other species-specific and age-appropriate care ready before pickup.
Loss caused by improper housing or brooder conditions is the buyer's responsibility and does not qualify for a refund or replacement.
JK Homegrown will provide reasonable support and answer care or brooder questions.
Returns, Rehoming, and Unwanted Animals
Once poultry has left JK Homegrown, it cannot be physically returned to the farm because of biosecurity. The buyer is responsible for the ongoing care or responsible rehoming of unwanted poultry, including unwanted males.
Pomeranian geese are governed by a separate conservation-stewardship and return policy. A buyer who can no longer keep a Pomeranian goose purchased from JK Homegrown, or one of its descendants, should follow that policy instead of the general poultry no-return rule.
Return, rehoming, and breeder take-back options for other species are governed by the applicable species-specific agreement or JK Homegrown's separate Returns, Rehoming, and Breeder Take-Back Policy.
Right to Refuse or Cancel a Placement
JK Homegrown may refuse or cancel a sale when the proposed placement appears unsuitable for the animal, the buyer has not met the applicable payment or pickup requirements, or completing the sale would not be in the animal's best interest.
Individual Sale Terms
An individual listing, invoice, reservation agreement, or sales agreement may include animal-specific terms. Any express guarantee or exception must be stated in writing. When an individual written agreement contains more specific terms than this general policy, the more specific terms apply to that sale.
